Deuteronomy 11-13; Psalm 43

God promises blessings for those who obey, for those who follow His commands. He has made a way for us to be restored to Him when we fail. Because no matter how hard we try, perfection seems to be just out of reach. Most sins don’t come with a death penalty (yes, sin leads to death, but walk with me here), as in an immediate execution of a death penalty for the committing of a specific sin.

It is interesting to note that there are some sins that do carry a death penalty under Old Testament law. One of which is turning from God and worshiping other gods. I have to believe that an opportunity for repentance is made available, but if not God cleanses the evil from among His people. If it is happening in an entire community, He says to practically bulldoze the community and let it stand as a symbol for those who chose not to follow God.

So the Psalmist says, God defend me against the ungodly. When we stand with God, we are not promised and easy life, but we are promised the strength of God to overcome what is before us. How we overcome may not be as we would script it. It may not be as we would plan or desire. Those who walk with God will have His power to assist, as we seek Him as our source of joy, truth and life.
