Blogging the Bible- April 4

Deuteronomy 8-10; Psalm 42

Do we long for God? Do we yearn for God?

The Psalmist paints a picture of a deer going to the stream to get water. How long can you go without water? Can you go an hour without drinking anything? Several hours? A day?

Before long your body enters a stage called dehydration. It is a painful affliction that can be easily prevented by drinking water. Yet how many of us are spiritually dehydrated because we have chosen to go through life without drinking from the streams of God.

Jesus calls Himself the Living Water that anyone who believes in Him will never thirst again. But we know better, or at least we think we do. We trudge on through the desert of life without any Living Water to drink and then we wonder why God feels so distant.

Moses tells the people of Israel as they are about to cross into the Promised Land. When things go well and you are living in abundance, DO NOT FORGET GOD. Don’t think you are here because of your own goodness. No, God brought you here because of the wickedness of those who lived here before you.

Moses knew that if they forgot God, they would become spiritually dehydrated. And if they became spiritually dehydrated, they would walk away from God. And if they walked away from God, they would be destroyed just as those who lived in this land before them.

How do you cure spiritual dehydration? Drink deeply, daily, from the Living Water, the Word of God.
