Numbers 31-33; Psalm 37:1-22

Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

That might be one of the verses that gets most taken out of context in the entire Bible. All we read is the Lord will give us the desires of our heart and wonder why things don’t go the way we want. We completely forget the whole delighting in the Lord section. We forget that our whole delight and success are found in God.

The Israelites found this out. As they traveled along, when they were trusting and obeying what the Lord commanded, they found success. But when they doubted, when they trusted their own strength over God’s, they were defeated.

  • Remember them trying to take the Promised Land AFTER they rejected the idea, they were defeated.
  • Remember Moses hitting the rock, instead of speaking to it, it cost him the opportunity to enter the Promised Land.
  • Remember when the people tried to mutiny against Moses, God’s chosen leader, it got many of them killed by plague or God’s wrath.
  • Remember when they didn’t keep themselves separate from the local people and they started following other gods, God’s judgment burned against them.

So this isn’t just a rubber stamp that God will give us what we want, it starts with delight in the Lord. Around this verse David gives us ways to delight in the Lord. He uses words like Trust, Commit, Don’t worry and Turn from rage.

The more we give ourselves to God and trust in Him the more we will find our desires and God’s desires coming into alignment.
