Hebrews 11-13; Psalm 27

I love the stories of faith in Hebrews 11. The things they faced, yet stayed true to their faith in God. I wonder if I would be able to withstand the same treatment and hold true. Would I stay faithful even if my life depended upon it? I’d like to say yes, and in my lifetime I may still face this type of persecution.

How did they stand so strong? They knew they had a home in heaven awaiting them. They trusted that God would deliver when the time was right, that He would come through just as He said.

So these are the great cloud of witnesses that have gone before, that are watching us now, that have paved the way. Not only the ancients, but also Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, He too endured great punishment, even the cross so that He might know the joy of a restored relationship with us. All of Hebrews builds to this, that Jesus is greater than Moses, greater than the angels, a greater High Priest, offers a Greater Sacrifice (His perfect life) and He is the one that the ancients longed for and pursued. He struggled to the point of death that we might not grow weary and lose heart.

I wonder how many of them faced their trials with Psalm 27 on their lips.

The Lord is my light and my salvation–so why should I be afraid? The Lord protects me from danger–so why should I tremble?

When we face adversity, it is the Lord who protects us? When we face persecution, it is He who guards us? He is the light we need when we are surrounded by darkness. He is our salvation when attack is near. We have no need to fear for our God, the Lord of Hosts fights for us. He will deliver us from our time of need.

So as we consider those who have gone before, and as we consider the faithfulness of God, may we face our trials with confidence knowing that our God is with us.
