Blogging the Bible- March 3

Leviticus 22-24; Proverbs 17:1-14

We are a people who need help remembering. We easily forget things and move on to something else.

God knew this would happen with His people, so written into their law, into their practice, are these festivals. Three times a year the whole assembly was to gather together to remember. Remember the Passover, how God brought them out of slavery. Remember the Harvest, the Festival of Firstfruits that God is our Giver and Sustainer. Remember the Shelters, remember that you traveled about the wilderness living in tents. Remember where you came from so that you will remember who brought you here.

How easily we forget how good God has been to us? How God has brought us through difficult times?

I’ve had a few in my life. I have been out of work. I’ve had a son who spent a 5 weeks in the NICU. I’ve had a heart attack and bypass surgery. I’ve been in some tough spots, but at each turn God has shown Himself faithful.

So in our house we celebrate December 7 because that was the day that Jadon got to come home from the hospital, and December 8 because that was the first day we were a family of four under the same roof.

We celebrate January 9 because, in the words of Mark Batterson, that’s my “second birthday” as I survived a heart attack and quintuple bypass surgery.

We celebrate birthdays and anniversary’s because we want to remember God’s goodness to us. The more we remember His goodness the easier it is to trust Him through difficult times.
