Mark 13-16; Psalm 20

Psalm 20 is another one of David’s Psalms where he declares his dependence on God. In times of trouble, he prays to God to keep him safe from harm. He knows that God is his provider (may He grant your heart’s desire and fulfill your plans) and protector (the Lord saves His anointed King). He is the one we exalt and boast about (some nations boast of their armies and weapons, we boast in the Lord).

How appropriate to read this alongside Mark’s telling of Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection? The ultimate plan for Jesus was saving us from our sin and restoring our relationship with God, (God granted the desire of His heart). Even though Jesus had to go through the pain of torture and crucifixion, through resurrection He was exalted to His rightful position (the Lord saves His anointed King).

The only question that remains is, do we boast in the Lord or in our own greatness?

Trusting in God leads to victory; trusting in ourselves leads to sure defeat.
