Family Resemblance

manmirrorMy Dad tells how he prayed (literally or metaphorically, I don’t know) that God would not let his boys be short like him (he’s 5’9″ so he’s not that short). I stand today as the runt of the family (6’0″ tall). In our own way each of us boys looks and acts like our Dad. We are family. It is how it should be. The older generation passes on its genes and its culture to the one that comes after. Each generation adapts what it has been given and passes it on. This is how life has gone on for generations.

Jesus had a family. His younger brothers thought He was losing His mind, so they took Mary (the mother of all these boys) and went to find Him and bring Him home.

The crowds had surrounded Him so much that they could not get through. Word was passed through the crowd that His mother and brothers were here for Him. Jesus response is not what we would expect. There is a bite. It almost sounds disrespectful to His mother.

“Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:33-35)

The defining characteristic of being a member of God’s family is that we do God’s will. Am I doing the things my Father would do? Do I resemble Him with the way I treat my neighbor, my wife, my children? Am I one way in private but another in public?

Do I look like my Father? Am I fulfilling His mission? Do I love God and people well?

Is there a family resemblance?
