All talk

We are in the middle of Grow: a series through the book of James. This week we are talking about taming the tongue.

Yesterday afternoon as I was working and following different, non-royal baby, events on Twitter news came out that Milwaukee Brewer outfielder Ryan Braun, winner of the NL MVP award in 2011, was suspended for the remainder of the season for using Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) and lying to cover up his actions. Charles Barkley would probably say this to Braun. All of this reminded me of the years of lies Lance Armstrong piled up before all of his actions caught up with him.

James 3:9-10-

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

I know that not everyone agrees with the authority of Scripture, so they may not follow this verse with their actions, but how often do we who call ourselves followers of Jesus fall victim to this same verse. Even put cursing aside, make it lies or gossip or any other use of words that would muddy the source from which the praise of our God comes.

Ephesians 4:29-

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

So what does our talk say about us? Does it reflect the One who made us? Is it worthy of the One we praise?

Let our words build up and encourage. Let our words teach and correct. Let our words be excellent and praiseworthy. May they express truth and be delivered with love.
